Episcopal Church Approves Ordination of Transgender People

On Monday, the Episcopal Church’s leadership overwhelmingly voted to allow the ordination of transgender people, by approving a change to the church’s “nondiscrimination canons” to include “gender identity and expression.” The Episcopal Church currently forbids discrimination based on race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, disability, and age for Episcopalians who want to become priests. Survey Shows Overwhelming Support for Transgender Americans

Transgender issues have been in the news quite a bit recently, from September’s controversy over Chaz Bono’s appearance on Dancing with the Stars to the Girl Scouts of Colorado’s choice to accept Bobby Montoya, a 7-year-old transgender child who had previously been turned away.
