Welcome to the Morning Buzz, PRRI’s morning dose of religion-related news with a shot of data – because what doesn’t liven up a morning round-up like some public opinion numbers?  According to CNN, there are now more “wireless devices” (a fancy term for cell phones and tablets) in the U.S. than people.  That means a whole lot of people are doubling up – or, alternately, that the world is being… more

Evangelicals’ Doubt That Mormonism is a Christian Religion May Not Hurt Romney

[10.11.2011]

As Dr. Robert P. Jones predicted in last week’s “Figuring Faith,” this weekend’s annual Values Voter Summit was a testing ground for Mitt Romney, the GOP front-runner and a devout Mormon.  While introducing Rick Perry, prominent evangelical pastor Robert Jeffress slammed Romney by asking his audience, “Do we want a candidate who is a good, moral person, or one who is a born-again follower of the Lord Jesus Christ?”  For… more

Figuring Faith: “Why Pat Robertson’s ‘Endorsement’ of Mitt Romney Matters”

[10.06.2011]

This weekend, Mitt Romney will be speaking at the Values Voter Summit, to an audience that likely cares deeply about the religious convictions of their future presidential nominee.  Previous research from PRRI has shown that Americans perceive Romney’s religion to be very different from their own, and that many don’t even believe that Mormonism is a Christian religion.  How will Romney fare this weekend?  Well, according to Dr. Robert P…. more

[10.06.2011]

Many of the GOP primary candidates will be in DC this weekend, but not for a debate (I hear your sigh of relief.  There have been a lot of those recently).  They’re all speaking at the annual Values Voter Summit, a conservative conference with four major stated goals: to “limit government,” “champion traditional values,” “reduce spending,” and “protect America.”  In addition to the seven major GOP candidates, speakers will include… more

Younger White Evangelicals Express Comfort With Muslim Religion, Culture

[10.04.2011]

Late last week, the lower house of the Swiss Parliament passed a piece of legislation that would bar Muslim women from wearing face-covering veils, including the burqa, a body-covering, full-veil robe worn by Muslim women, in public places.  If the law passes in the upper house, Switzerland will join a significant handful of European countries – France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain – that have considered or implemented similar… more

[09.30.2011]

Although the idea of Biblical womanhood may seem foreign to some, it’s a crucial concept for the solid majority (66%) of white evangelical Christians who believe that the Bible is the literal word of God.  Last October, a self-identified evangelical Christian blogger and author named Rachel Held Evans set out to test this scriptural literalism by taking it to its logical extreme.  In her year-long “Womanhood Project,” she resolved to… more

Figuring Faith | Rick Perry and the Perils of Sectarian Religion in 2012

[09.23.2011]

In a new post for his blog at the Washington Post On Faith, our CEO Dr. Robert P. Jones explores the challenges that Rick Perry may bump up against if he continues in the vein of his recent speech at Liberty University: To outside observers, Perry’s course may seem strange for someone who is making the case that he should be the next president of the most influential nation in… more
